          From cliff-top
          It wreathes clay
          Entwines rock
          Gripping tight
          Wedging deep
          To shore

Pohutukawa grows best close
to the sea, where if often produces
massive spreading trees that
overhang the water, the huge
branches growing out almost
horizontally. Its deep roots
enable the tree to cling to steep
banks and rocks and remaing there.
